The Man Who Moved a Mountain
Dashrath Manjhi was an indian farmer whose wife had been injured and needed urgent medical attention. He had had to travel around the Gehlour mountain to get medical help at the next available town with a doctor, about 70km away. Unfortunately he lost her as a result of timely medical treatment. Motivated by his grief and not wanting another villager to suffer his fate, he set out solely to carve a road through the mountain. So, with a chisel, a hammer and a shovel, this legend set to work for over two decades. For 22years, he chiselled away and shortly before he died, he was able to accomplish a mission the government had turned a blind eye to. His achievement produced a shorter route for his villagers. In an interview, he said, " love for my wife was the initial spark that ignited in me the desire to carve out a road. But what kept me working without fear or worry all those years was the desire to see thousands of villagers crossing the hill with ease, whenever they wanted". Dashrath succumbed to cancer in 2007 shortly after he finished the road.
